Performance evaluation is supposed to assist the learning process and give useful information to the teacher and the student. For this,, two things are needed: different forms of check-ups (not only written and oral exams) and constructive feedback to the students. This article describes methods which stimulate the students to deal with mathematics independently. The students have to judge themselves whether or not they find a challenge interesting and they have to give reasonable arguments why they made this choice. The learners can also construct tasks on their own. Those students' performances are often creative and allow a valuable inside into their level of mathematical comprehension. The teacher's personal feedback on this kind of exercises is a lot more effective than the usual exam questions being equal for everybody and only with one single solution. |
