| Abstract | 'The didactics of plurilingualism' corresponds to the principal goal of the European Union's language education programme and to the social phenomena behind it. This not only explains why it encounters so much interest, but why this notion has developed into a 'catch-word' in the world of language education. Thus, it covers different contexts related to languages, inter- and multiculturalism. Considering the German discussion, the paper sketches the areas of linguistic education and educational theories that are connected to the didactics of plurilingualism. As multi-language and learning awareness have been revealed to be fundamental in various areas related to this concept, and as teaching and learning intercomprehension proves to be an efficient tool for increasing the learner's autonomy, the second focus of the article concerns the learning and teaching of intercomprehension.
