Abstract	In addition to the organisation of resources for learning, the specification IMS Learning Design offers a framework for capturing activities of both learners and teaching staff. In connection with roles, learning activities (as well as supporting activities) serve as a core concept in IMS Learning Design and allow the description of process rather than content for re-usable units of learning. Derived from a conceptual examination and an empirical review of IMS Learning Design carried out in a research project at the Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in Germany, the paper outlines some specific issues of learning activities based on activity theory, which reveals specific implications of learning activities as a supplement to common approaches such as a behaviourist model, a cognitivist approach or a situationalist paradigm.(Orig.).
