Abstract | Pupils who can barely put two words together during oral exams, break out in cold sweat when confronted with unannounced quizze]s}, and find it next to impossible to commit anything to memory in preparing for an exam despite being adequately talented are likely suffering from test anxiety. According to scientific estimations, one of six male students and one of four female students are affected by this phenomenon. This article specifically addresses the situation of high gifted students. Following a definition of the term test anxiety and a depiction of possible consequences, we will report on results obtained from investigations of whether gifted pupils experience higher, lower or the same levels of test anxiety as averagely gifted pupils, and how special programs developed to support giftedness affect the way in which pupils experience anxiety. Using the Actiotope Model of Giftedness as a theoretical foundation, we will investigate what parents and teachers can do to reduce test anxiety and then present concrete measures the can be taken. |
