Abstract | Since the beginning of the 20th century, researchers in education have been trying to draw an accurate picture of the effects of the practice of repeating a year in school. The studies dealing with this topic have benefited from major developments, namely, improved research practices and ever more sophisticated techniques for analysing statistics. The idea is to have an exact picture of the actual effects of the practice of repeating a year, which implies a methodological reflection on the sources of bias as well as on the methods that will prove most opposite to control those sources. the article reports on this methodological development and comments on the main findings of the research.
