Abstract | Thirty features of the learning experience as perceived by a sample of 3.300 students in 11 secondary schools in the United Kingdom were analysed to see how far students positively rated the classroom environment, challenge in lessons, learning styles, teaching approaches, relationships with teachers, and awareness of key skills. These data are used together with interviews and observation to ascertain the extent of "match" with 5 models of culture. The schools that appear to offer the highest level of learning experience are those where there is clear leadership vision, formal-rational organisational interaction, a moving organisational direction, and integrated staff and an effective balance of social control and cohesion. This leads to suggestions for descriptors of the resultant culture of learning. (DIPF/Orig.). |
