Abstract | Since 1997, after the publication of each edition of "Education at a glance", the OECD division on media relations, public affairs and communications collects the related press clippings about this from the member countries, and compiles a press book. So far, four press books have been published. ... After each release, OECD invites its member countries to send their press articles to the OECD Secretariat. So, the number of articles per country included in the book does not only reflect the interest of the press in a specific country, but also partly depends on the contribution and willingness of the individual member countries to collect the press articles. In this chapter the attention that international indicators receive in the press, i.e. OECD's booklets with press clippings, will be examined. First, attention will be paid to the countries included in the press books. Then the press clippings of six out of seven countries involved in the BEQUAD ["Benchmarking the quality of education"] project will be examined in more detail. Two of the five indicators that received most publicity in the press clippings of the BEQUAD countries will be considered more closely. In a separate paragraph, attention will be paid on the impact of OECD indicators on the Italian press. In Italy, where there is a lack of national reports based on international indicators, and the other experienced partners for the exchange of views have left the scene, the press is of prime importance in the way information from international indicators is selected and interpreted. The chapter ends with some remarks concerning the most recurrent topis referred to in indicators, the quality perspectives distinguished by Jaap Scheerens. (DIPF/Orig.). |
