| Abstract | This report results from some work performed by teachers in the Versailles education authorities area, within the frame of the INRP (Institute for Pedagogical Research); it deals with the issue of teaching difficult topics belonging to the XXth century, namely the question of the memory and of the history of the extermination of Jewish people and of colonial wars. This survey, carried out between 2000 and 2003, has contributed to bring to light difficulties specific to the teaching of these subjects, from primary school level to high school level, in various subjects - litterature, history and philosophy -. It has also led to the analysis of the current representations among students as well as among teachers concerning those topics that recent events brought back into light in such a forceful way.
