Abstract | This paper provides an overview of general changes in Swedish society and the large scale educational reforms - first during the 1950s and 1960s when the education system was made comprehensive and then during the 1990s when the system was radically restructured from a highly centralized one to a decentralized one. The reforms of the 1990s corresponded to the 'world model' which has been implemented internationally, but the specific features of the dialectics between global features and national contexts should be interpreted in terms of Swedish organizational traditions and cultural patterns.
