Abstract	This paper reflects on effects of the involvement of teachers into projects of curriculum innovation in Germany. The projects seek to establish a sustained interaction of science education researchers and classroom practitioners as a fundamental necessity for a useful and sustainable innovation of science teaching. The projects are based on the theoretical frameworks of Participatory Action Research in Chemistry Education and Teachers' Learning Communities. Taking the teachers into consideration as the key to reform teaching and learning in schools, the projects aim at the professional development of teachers as an equally stated goal. Accompanying research is conducted in order to evaluate whether and how the involvement of practitioners into the projects leads to changes in their pedagogical content knowledge, their attitudes towards teaching and curriculum innovation, and classroom activities. Experiences and data are discussed from the co-operation of researchers and teachers in the projects 'New ways toward the particulate nature of matter', 'Alternative methods in science teaching', and 'Chemie im Kontext (Chik)'.
