Abstract | The article is seeking to re-formulate the German concept of Bildung to cope adequately with postmodern challenges according to Lyotard. It places Lyotard's concept of the Postmodern Condition in the philosophical context of The Differend and focuses on radical plurality of diverse language games as a characteristic feature of postmodernity. The ethical implication of Lyotard's theory facilitates a new version of Bildung as a linguistic process consisting of two dimensions: the recognition of differend as an unresolved conflict among different genres of discourse, and the attempt to find new idioms which seek to state what could not be expressed before. |
