Abstract | The author investigates the way Irish universities answer the demand for Accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Lerarning (AP(E)L). With the decreasing number if traditional students, these institutions became attentive to non-traditional students or developed 'extra-mural courses'. ... AP(E)L invites one to overcome the separation [between separate curricula for the two student groups] and challenges the capacities of universities to recognise and assess learning acquired outside the academic sphere. ... [The article presents] through micro case studies from the 1990s, the perception from inside the academy of the expectations of groups outside the academy with regard to to recognising and accrediting their non-formal and informal learning. ... [The article gives] firstly a brief presentation of each case emphasising the AP(E)L dimension, and secondly some brief systhesised reflections on the cases in the context of current informal and non-formal learning theory.
