Abstract | The paper aims to refine the understanding of the attentional mechanisms of second language learners' self-repair behaviour by means of the qualitative analysis of two Hungarian learners' output and the detailed retrospective comments they made on their performance. The results show that the distribution of attention at these two levels of proficiency differs to a considerable extent. The preintermediate learner was found to pay special attention to the application of grammatical rules, whereas the upper-intermediate student's attention was directed at the lexical level. It is argued that the difference between the learners' self-repair behavious is due to the differing degree of automaticity of the participants' speech. (Verlag). |
