| Abstract | This paper reports on a bench-marking type study of twelve second-level schools in Ireland whose performance was well above the national norm in Higher Level Leaving Certificate French in 1993. The object was to discover if any salient factors in their success could be identified with a view to sharing good practice with other schools. The outstanding common characteristics identified were: (a) a high level of proficiency in spoken French on the part of the teacher; (b) more than average use of French as the language of the classroom, and (c) a reasonable allocation of time to the teaching of the subject.
