Abstract | This is a systematic analysis of the similarities and differences between the systems of guidance and counselling in higher education institutions in the Member States of the European Union. The structures of the services are analysed, together with the main roles within the services, and the tasks they perform. The training and qualifications required for guidance and counselling staff are discussed. Special attention is given to the identification of new skills required by the professional staff of such services. New skills are needed to respond to the changes in higher education in Europe. The expansion of higher education means that the student population is now much more diverse, and that higher education now interfaces with a much wider sector of the labour market. This, together with an increasing pressure towards efficiency and accountability, and moves towards greater flexibility, are placing new demands on guidance and counselling services. All these trends have considerable implications for training and staff development. Gliederung: 1. Structural Trends in Higher Education 2. Structures of Guidance and Counselling Services 3.
