Abstract | The indigenous peoples of Latin America live in conditions of extreme poverty. This paper represents an initial attempt at documenting the socio-economic conditions of indigenous people using empirical data from national survey sources. The nature of the analysis is microeconomic, using household survey data that includes information on indigenous peoples defined in terms of ethnic self- perception, language use and geographical concentration. The aim is to empirically investigate the socio-economic conditions of the indigenous people of Latin America and to identify correlates of poverty. This documentation provides the vital information needed to design strategies for operations and to assist these groups in a poverty reduction strategy. The results point to an enhanced role for education in reducing poverty among the indigenous population of Latin America.(DIPF/Text übernommen). |
