Abstract | Intercultural experiences pose inevitable challenges to one's personal identity and communication skills. One has to learn how to deal with unexpectedness, ambiguity and otherness as well as the resulting culture bumps or culture shock. The knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary for successful intercultural communication have to be observed, discussed and practised. ... The main aim of this textbook is to help develop intercultural communicative competence. Regardless of topic, each unit in the book has the following learning objectives: 1. to reflect on the students' own culturally determined values, behaviours and ways of thinking, 2. to raise awareness of intercultural differences in values, behaviours and ways of thinking, 3. to raise awareness of culturally determined aspects of language use, 4. to practise observation and interpretation skills as well as critical thinking, 5. to develop and adopt multiple perspectives, 6. to negotiate common ground, 7. to develop empathy, open mindedness and respect for otherness.
