Abstract | This paper aims to produce a synthesis of the major contributions by feminist theory to the understanding of educational institutions by focusing on two axes: the internal practices of educational systems and the educational policies enacted and implemented by the state. The paper shows that comparative educational research has benefitted from feminist theory and feminist research methodologies. It also shows that, as feminist theory moves further into the study of social and economic inequality, the challenges posed by additional social markers, such as class, race, and ethnicity, remain to be tackled.
