Abstract | This handbook constitutes an international inventory of successful strategies to increase the participation of women in this sector and thus promotes the principle of gender equity in higher education. The Beijing Platform of Action listed priority areas where further action was vital to ensure the personal empowerment of women so that they could make their full contribution to social development. Women in decision-making posts in all sectors was amongst these priorities. In higher education, this problem needs urgent attention as very few women are national policy-makers or institutional leaders. As this sector undergoes rapid and far-reaching change, the contribution of well-qualified women is not only logical but also a matter of social and professional justice. The handbook contains a wide range of experiences, including the results of UNESCO's Special Project on Women, Higher Education and Development. This focuses on seven UNESCO Chairs and university networks to support women graduates in fields related to socio-economic and cultural development. Contents: Section A: Background to the problem (Access to higher education. - Women in higher education management. - Factors disabling women). - Section B: Special initiatives to improve the status of women in higher education (Legislative and infrastructure support. - Increasing the quantity and quality of women postgraduate students. - Training programmes and courses. - Academic women's networks. - Mentoring. - Establishment of women's universities and colleges. - Women's studies. - Gender management systems (GMS)). - Section C: Women in leadership (WIL) projects and programmes (The issue: International development agencies. - University associations and networks. - Institutional practices. - Lessons learned). - Section D: Guidelines (Commitment and support from the top. - Legislative framework. - Importance of support structures. - Bringing on board the wider community and key players. - Integration into strategic plans. - Setting of targets. - Transparency of procedures for recruitment and promotion. - Enabling women meet employment criteria. - Establishing special programmes and networks for women. - Regular monitoring and reporting. - An integrated and holistic approach. - Visibility of programmes. - External catalyst. - Indigenization of programme. - Improve supply of women into higher education. - Developing a gender management system) (HoF/text adopted). |
