Abstract | The author studies the role of the educated elite in the social and political mobilisation launched by perestroika and glasnost'. His case study on the Karelian Republic displays how cultural capital was used constantly during the mobilisation period to challenge the power structure and those possessing 'political capital' did not end with the collapse of communism, and that these concepts can serve as a useful tool in the analysis of the present transformation period.
