Abstract | The French "collège unique" (comprehensive secondary school) tries to reach its objectives of equality and democracy. This cornerstone of our educational system is submitted to many tension in its attempt to "promote all children" and in the same time to "select the best of them". The comprehensive secondary school faces new challenges ( for instance, to prepare students to the upper level, to go for the "baccalauréat" with a success rate of 80%). It now proposes more flexible pedagogical devices. But presently we question its aptitude to fight efficiently against the exclusion of those who do not find their way in academic studies and to do better than preparing future students' selection.
