| Abstract | Introduces a special journal issue aiming to build up a "state of the art" picture of available research on conceptual models in the field of motivation gains in groups. A brief review of the main relevant theoretical approaches is given, which include the collective effort model, social identity theory, the Koehler motivation gain effect, goal-setting theory, and a new paradigmatic perspective based on the approach of multiple perspectives. Additional processes that are possible sources of motivation gains in groups (social facilitation, social competition, group goal setting, ingroup entativity, group effects on mood and perceived self-efficacy, expected reciprocity, and volunteerism in community and organizational groups) are also briefly outlined, and challenges for further research are discussed.
