Abstract | This paper reports empirical research suggesting that teachers' broad social and political world-view is consistent with their ideas about the purpose of education and the role of the teacher, and that this also impacts directly on their classroom practice. This research finds results from studies relating to the teaching of Citizenship Education in particular, and more widely to the teaching of values. The empirical data comes from two strands. The first examines the social and political attitudes and values of post-graduate student teachers in England, focusing in particular on their notions of citizenship and the role of education in developing "good citizenship". ... The second strand describes serving teachers' practice with regard to teaching Global Citizenship and also records the aims that underlie this practice. ( DIPF/orig.) |
