Abstract | "This book aims to contribute to the understanding of changes [that took place in the governance of school education in many Western countries in the 1980s and 1990s] by describing, analysing and comparing the effects of devolved management, mainly on secondary schools. It is based upon empirical research and theoretical analysis in the education systems of the constituent education systems of the United Kingdom (UK) - England (and Wales), Scotland and Northern Ireland - and in other countries: the United States, New Zealand and Denmark. It deals, in particular, with changing approaches to school management, the effect of the market, public participation in school-based decision-making, the role of teachers as professionals, and the refashioning of systems of governance that include schools' internal management and their relation to other public authorities and loci of power."
