Abstract | In the first part of his contribution the author describes what is meant by social identity and how it helps us to understand inter-group interactions, and in the second part he discusses how the theory can be used in developing methods and materials for foreign language teaching. Derived from findings of the social identity theory, which was developed in research on minority groups and has been used to understand and explain racism, the author formulates three particular tasks of the language teacher including also the following: to help learners to understand how others see them and they see others, how their perceptions are influenced by categorisations, and sometimes by the simplifications of stereotyping.
