| Abstract | This study is to give the reader a short overview of the Czech education system, the role of foreign languages in it, the state of early language teaching, how teachers cope with challenges, and finally, what the major achievements and problems in these areas are.- After 1989, fundamental changes in the study of foreign languages occurred in institutionalised education. The politically and ideologically motivated position of Russian language study in primary and secondary education ended and was replaced by the language policy of the Council of Europe, of which the Czech Republic became a member in 1990. Students have the right and opportunity to choose one out of five foreign languages at the primary level and one out of six at the upper secondary stage. (DIPF/orig./Ba.). |
