Abstract | The essay is divided into the following sections: 1. General processes and national variants in the formation of academic disciplines; 2. The emergence of philosophico-hermeneutic Paedagogik in Germany; 3. The twofold institutionalization of sciences de l'education in France; 4. Discipline formation patterns reflected in the theoretical constitution of the field; 5. At the end of the second millennium: growing convergence or preservation of national styles? The author realizes that "the analyses illustrate the contrast between the overarching differentiation, scientization, and professionalization characteristic of the modern university, on the one hand, and divergent discipline formation processes followed by the same field of study indifferent national settings, on the other.... The institutionalization of one or another variant of the educational sciences is rather as much the product of the combined effects of university-state relations, of socio-institutional conditions, and of different intellectual traditions, as their development accross time is the result of epistemological choices and intellectual exclusions that favor certain theoretical options while excluding others".
