Abstract	Ukraine is a fascinating example of an educational transitology, its 20th-century history being a set of more or less violent changes rather than revolutionary eras, culminating in its emergence as a, new' state towards the end of the century.... During states of transition, as in revolutionary periods, organizing the education system is a central and challenging task. To modify it in terms of such key issues as visions of the future and of the past is well nigh on impossible. Indeed, the case can be made that states of transition are more difficult for education than revolutions, as the changes are less clear-cut, the directions more difficult to delineate and respond to. To demonstrate this process, this article looks at the two recent states of transition (1914-24 and 1986-97) and the violent intermission between them in Ukraine, formerly the Soviet Socialist Republic of Ukraine. Within this broader context, the issues posed by the Crimea, an autonomous region within the state, are looked at in more detail as they reveal more clearly still some of the educational issues that have arisen.
