| Abstract | "In this article some findings of the project 'The assessment, evaluation and assurance of quality in schools in the European Union', which was carried out in selected member states in 1995 and 1996, are discussed." The author points out that "the project concentrated on system assessment or evaluation rather than personnel assessment or evaluation", and, in the article enumerates five aspects which should be considered in research about external assessment and evaluation of school systems. The main part of the article is devoted to an overview of the strongly contrasting approaches the countries Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands apply in their "supervising and evaluating operations" done by different forms of school inpectorate.
