Abstract | The author provides an international overview, analysing the current dynamics in the changing relationships between higher education and the world of work in terms of job prospects for graduates, massification of higher education, growth in the knowledge society, rapid technological change and its impact on the structure of industry and services. Whilst acknowledging that the systematic knowledge base of the relationships between higher education and work is limited, he notes that what evidence there is does point in the direction of higher education becoming more useful for the world of work, although according to the Humboldtian ideal a significant distance might be most productive for society. He concludes that whilst it is difficult for higher education to strike a balance between links to, and distance from, the world of work, such controversies should not be deplored. Rather what is needed is more in-depth knowledge of the needs of society by all those responsible for higher education. Gliederung: - Increased interest in the relationships between higher education and the world of work. - Some methodological observations. - The changing context. - Developments of job requirements. - Implications for higher education.
