Abstract	Self-assessment of schools became a topic for discussion in the Austrian education field when the question of new possibilities for quality assurance arose. In Austria too - the individual schools have been given more autonomy by the Fourteenth Amendment of the School Organisation Act in 1993. The article comprises the following sections: 1) Self-assessment - an element of the 'curriculum 99'. 2) ' Quality in school' - a support initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs for self-assessment. 3) The 'school programme' with mandatory self-assessment for all Austrian schools? 4) Consequences of the European pilot project 'Quality evaluation in school education' in Austria. 5) Self-assessment in Upper Austria. 6) The tasks of the Austrian inspectorate concerning self-assessment.
