AbstractHardly any other education theme has developed so dynamically, evoked such a response, had such an effect on research, the organisation of the school and the planning of instruction than the evaluation of school achievement and results.... For a long time the educational policy interest has been focused on the improvement of internal steering instruments. But now the interest has shifted in the direction of the evaluation of the results of instruction. Emphasis on this theme has also been induced by international empirical studies and comparisons of schools. It has become a new challenge for most European countries, not least because comparisons of school results tend to give rise to a debate about the legitimacy of such comparisons amongst those whose results are less satisfactory.... The SICI Workshop, documented in this publication, focused on the question of how the work of school supervisors can contribute to helping the individual schools in their internal school evaluation. This question is at the core of considerations in many countries. The spectrum of approaches and the differentiation of possible answers are arranged in four coherent blocks: first there is given an overview of the work of the SICI which has been hitherto undertaken by the association and which has led to focusing on the theme chosen for the workshop. Then follows a 'state of the art report' which analyses international approaches and perspectives. For the State of North-Rhine- Westphalia the main areas and developments in this field and the present state of discussion becoming apparent there are identified. In a second block follow four reports from different countries in which, respectively, it is explained how the concepts of school supervision are organised in order to support school in self-assessment. The third block brings together the results of the discussion of the main questions posed to the working groups and attempts to give an initial resumé. In a fourth block examples and extracts from instruments, tools and conceptual approaches are given, some of which were presented during the workshop, further discussed or newly established.
