Abstract | The article explores the relationship between pedagogy and the quality of academic teaching. Firstly, it examines the position of academic pedagogy within the current debate on quality in Germany. Secondly, it analyses normative orientations and theoretical perceptions about the teaching and learning process in higher education, while a third stage seeks to answer the questions of how teaching quality is to be defined, and what its implications are for the pedagogical training and in-service training of the academic staff. The article is divided into the following sections: Introduction. - The place of academic pedagogy in the debates on quality. - Normative framework and theoretical insights. - What is good teaching? - Final remarks.
