Abstract	The three studies in this publication (David Little: Strategic competence considered in relation to strategic control of the language learning process; René Richterich: Strategic competence: acquiring learning and communication strategies; Henri Holec: Self-directed learning: an alternative form of training) "were prepared in the context of preliminary work on the development of a Common European Framework of reference for language learning and teaching. The authors explore the notion of strategic competence in communication and learning situations and the result is a valuable contribution to the discussion on the relationship between models of competence and their realisation in the performance of communicative tasks, and an increased awareness of the central role of 'strategies' in language learning and language use."
