Abstract	Modernisation of teacher education (TE) is very much a key concept of present-day educational reform movements and tendencies in Turkey as in Germany. This is surely an indication of the strategic role (rightly or wrongly) ascribed to TE in improving and remedying a more and more problematic situation at the level of compulsory schooling. However, it is also to be seen as an indication of the prevailing dissatisfaction with the results of TE courses as they are delivered nowadays in higher education institutions. While systems of TE in Turkey and in Germany may be different in many respects, it is hardly debatable that in both countries prospective teachers are not receiving in the existing TE institutions the kind of solid professional preparation needed for understanding and dealing with the basic problems involved in teaching and learning in schools in a rapidly changing class society.
