Abstract | In 1994 an interdisciplinary action research programme addressed to primary school teachers was conducted at a school in Athens with 65% minority pupils. It was designed: a) to bring into focus the attitudes and practices of primary school teachers faced with the difficult taks of educating minority children; b) to serve as a pilot approach to teacher training in the dynamics of discrimination; and c) to provide the base on which to develop multicultural education material addressed to both teachers and pupils. In-service contact with teachers and the sharing of their experience proved essential to the conceptualization of the complex and multiply charged issue of the presence of minority children in the Greek school system. It led the team to an understanding of discrimination, through a better grasp of its workings, its manifestations, and its destructive potential. On the other hand, the active participation of teachers in sessions which aimed at a cognitive/emotional integration of material resulted in greater awareness of the minorities' entitlement to basic human rights, even if it did not meet teacher's expectations in providing "concrete solutions" to problems they faced in practice.
