Abstract | This is a publication of the subnetwork of the Réseau des Institutions de Formation (Teacher Training Networks) which is composed of participants from Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom. As the editor emphasizes in the preface of the volume, the concept of European citizenship is a difficult and complex topic. After six years of intensive research work and practical implementation the authors from the various EU Member States have not come to an agreed definition on the aspect. As teacher-trainers they have tried to introduce the concept into teacher education. By introducing it in schools they experienced further difficulties: "Do we consider that a child is already a citizen, or will he/she only be a citizen when he is grown up? And in what way does a child assimilate citizenship, in particular European Citizenship?" These are only two of a whole series of questions they had to ask themselves. (DIPF/Ba.). |
