| Abstract | "As ERASMUS takes on its new role under the SOCRATES programme, it is important to remember that the impact of a study period abroad can extend well beyond the academic year in which it takes place, and can affect many more lives than merely those directly involved." "The study reports the major findings of a survey of former ERASMUS students undertaken about five years after the ERASMUS- supported study period abroad. 1.234 persons having been awarded an ERASMUS grant during the academic year 1988/89, the second year of the ERASMUS programme, responded to the short written questionnaire mailed to them in spring 1994." "Looking at the longer lasting effects of student mobility from the point of view of the students themselves, this study complements the series of regular surveys of student experiences undertaken over the period of the programme." In six chapters the findings of the survey are summarized: 1. General introduction into the ERASMUS Programme, 2. Graduation and further study activities, 3. Employment and work, 4. The European and international dimension of transition to work, 5. The European and international dimension of work tasks and related competences and 6. Retrospective assessment of study abroad.
