Abstract	This publication aims to build new ground for Finnish- Irish co- operation projects in the fields of general and vocational adult education. This publication also seeks to offer a basis for comparison needed when developing common European education programmes.... The approach of the articles (compiled in this publication) may best be characterised as "practical-scientific". The relevant educational structures in both countries are analysed in a way that makes comparisons possible. When dealing with various themes and topics, both countries' theoretical and research traditions as well as achievements are presented. Some American aspects have been included to provide a contrastive basis when analysing the Finnish and Irish adult education systems. On a practical level the goal is to promote co-operation as defined in the Cultural Agreement, in various forms on the topics presented. The purpose of this publication is to function as a conceptual, structural instrument that could also content-wise bring up questions of mutual interest for co-operation projects. Furthermore it could provide common grounds for comparing the extent and contents of studies in both countries, and even for planning reciprocal programmes of cultural and educational exchanges or perhaps modules for adult education programmes.
