| Abstract | First, there is given a brief introduction with regard to the historical development of Senegal's education system in close connection with its economic history since 1817. Having been "the political capital of French West Africa until the end of the 1950s, it had largely been oriented towards the service sector so that the colonial system could function correctly". Then budgetary issues in education and training are analysed in the socio-economic context in which the cuts have been made. The socio-political consequences of these cuts on the state and civil sector, and the consequences of the structural adjustment policies on vocational education are discussed. Finally, the consequences for society in Senegal are considered, as well as the uncertainty that surrounds the evolution of the education and training system. (DIPF/orig./St.). |
