Abstract | Contributors to this volume see great potential in research by teachers for contributing to personal renewal and to educational reform. They illuminate that potential while by no means underestimating the problems encountered when "teaching is seen as research and research as teaching." Teacher research takes many forms. The major emphasis here is on teacher research where there is some kind of collaboration or partnership between school and university. The examples given highlight the importance of recognizing that the practitioner's wisdom is a valid source of knowledge about teaching. They also illustrate the ways in which teacher research can profoundly affect the personal and professional development of participants. Among the prominent themes in the volume are the value of research by teachers as opposed to the value of research conducted by "outsiders"; the problems and opportunities in collaborative research; the importance of research by prospective teachers as a feature of teacher education programs; teacher research as a form of staff development; and the conditions under which research by teachers can flourish in schools.
