Abstract	Fifty years after the Education Act of 1944 the authors of this book describe the development of education reforms since then, the preface says: "few fundamental changes in schooling have actually taken place". Nevertheless, the fiftieth anniversary of the 1944 Act is an occasion when we should try to take an opertunic view of the future of education in the UK and make statements about our reasonable "expectations". The topics raised are: "From 1944 to 1994: what have we learned?"; the need for a self-governing organization (such as the General Teaching Council); the growth of strategies that acknowledge the transitional process from school to work and employment; the challanges to educational managers; new definitions of the strategies for responding to special educational needs; collaboration between schools as the essentional professional response to the current educational crisis; a radical reappraisal of the science and technology curriculum; the concept of parental choice and how it relates to the concept of student choice; and the experience of other European states. The concluding chapter asks whether education in the UK deserves an obituary or is experiencing a rebirth. (DIPF/Umschlagtext/Bi).
