Abstract | Utilizing the recent research by the Council of Europe, and especially the research carried out within the programme "Democratic Citizenship Education" ... the text proposes the synthesis of fundamental concepts and key competencies in citizenship education. At the beginning the author presents the context of this synthesis and tries to find the reasons for the persistent comebacks of citizenship education. In the second part, scrutinizing the concept of citizenship itself, he reaffirms that its core is belonging to a specific political community, and that from this core later on new dimensions of citizenship have evolved. ... He proposes two methods of categorizing key competencies and offers a concise general survey of various practical solutions, such as positions of citizenship education and specific contributions of individual schools.
