| Abstract | This paper reports on the professional outcomes for four female undergraduate teacher education students that resulted from their experiences as facilitators of learning in two youth detention centres in Queensland, Australia. In addition to their formal practice teaching periods in schools, these home economic students volunteered to participate in a project in which they taught food preparation skills to disadvantaged (predominantly male) young people in custodial context. The nature of the context, with its unique demands and challenges for solving pedagogical problems, added an unusual dimension to the acquisition od knowledge, skills and attitudes through practice teaching in the more traditional school classroom environment. The implications of the experiences and professional growth of the studetns for teacher education courses are also explored in the paper. (DIPF/orig.) |
