Abstract | The paper is divided into three sections. In the first section three selected basic concepts of ethics are introduced which are of importance in discussion about the media ethics of the internet. One of the three concepts is distinguished as being that which seems the most tenable in today's conditions. In the second section the author demonstrates what he understands by a media ethics, in a non-pretentious sense, of the Internet. With the internet in mind it is shown how questions of a pragmatically understood media ethics can be construed as questions of suitable education in media competence. Against this background the final section of the account will set out what concrete demands in terms of media competence and faculty of judgement arise in the conditions of mass-medium use of the internet.
