| Abstract | Support for historical study to inform the future development of the school curriculum has made little impact on scholars in the field of school physical education or in the history of sport in countries such as Australia, Britain and North America. This paper provides an overview of the meagre amount of material published between 1986 and 1998 that has been concerned with school sport and physical education. Following this overview, there is a brief discussion of reasons for the neglect of historical studies in physical education and some proposals for ways in which this situation might be remedied. There are three broad thematic foci of the studies overviewed here. The first and largest, and certainly most mature, is the ongoing study of school sport and physical education in schools serving the middle and ruling classes in Britain and other countries. The second focus and possibly the best developed in terms of its theoretical integration with other field is studies of school sport and physical education, much of it from a feminist perspective. The third focus is a collection of studies of physical education in schools serving the masses. In the second category of studies, schools serving the middle classes remains the dominant concern and provides a useful counterpoint to studies of socially elite boys' sport and physical education. In the third category, most of the historical work published in English has taken place in countries other than Britain, such as Canada, Australia and the USA. (geändert). (Autor). |
