| Abstract | The right of parents to choose the type of education for their children is thoroughly recognized by all the nations of the European Union. Putting into action plans, which seek to strengthen and facilitate parents' choice of schools, is a complex question, which defies easy solutions. The plans currently in effect throughout the EU have similarities and differences so intermingled that judging the pros and cons of plans, as a whole, is quite difficult. In the countries analyzed - Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Spain - parents can freely choose the type of education they want for their children. Of course, economical, organizational and structural limitations often restrict the practical effect of parents' freedom to choose the school that they feel is best for their children.
