| Abstract | This aper examines different philosophical frameworks by which policy decisions concerning education are made and over which issues concerning the distribution of resources in society can be determinded. These frameworks include classical liberalism, which constitutes the philisophical basis of choice theories regarding education, and which includes both right-based as well as utilitarian approaches; Rawlsianism, which constitutes a 20th-century form of social democratic liberalism, frequently invoked by those seeking to philosophically justify some minimal form of welfare state; and communitarian frameworks ... which stands opposed to the basic postulates and axioms of liberalism. The paper also examines liberal criticisms of communitarism and argues that communitarianism can be defended against such criticisms. As such, communitarianism constitutes a viable philosophical and political orientation in terms of which social democratic principles, incorporating a respect for freedom of thought and expression, personal autonomy, individual rights and democratic practice can be based, and which avoids the fundamental problems of liberalism.
