Abstract | The lower altitudes of Mount Kilimanjaro are inhabited by people called "Chagga". Among them it was maintained "that 'reading and writing too much' could drive students to the brink of hysteria, producing in some cases a condition known in Kiswahili as kichaa", a sort of mass hysteria. The author suggests as an explanation "that kichaa is connected to cultural beliefs about the social development of girls and boys. Local exegeses of school-related illness reveal contestations over normative ideas about gender and human development generally. This article expands conventional discussions about educational outcomes - especially around gender - to show local differences in how schooling produces educated persons. ... I ask how cultural analysis of schooling can expand our vision of the meaning and scope of educational outcomes and ... I focus on how people themselves describe and organize their educational experiences." (DIPF/Bi.) |
