| Abstract | Israel and Canada absorb many immigrants. In Canada there is a public policy of multiculturalism which advocates pluralism. In Israel ethnic policy is somewhat more vague. It officially promotes pluralism and emphasizes nationalism. During 1994 a questionnaire was distributed among 250 students of grades 4, 5, 6 and 7 in a town in the north of Israel and among 150 students at a Jewish day school in Canada. The study results show that the Canadian students were more understanding of the general difficulties facing new immigrants students than were the Israelis, and that the Israelis held a more negative attitude towards new immigrants. ... Considerable differences existed in the way the immigrants' culture was perceived. Most Israelis expected the new immigrants to abandon their previous culture and imitate the Israeli culture. Also, the Israeli students did not think that the new immigrants' knowledge and culture might make an important contribution to Israeli society. However, most Canadian students expected the new immigrants to retain and preserve their former culture.
